Tuesday was International Men’s Day. I know what you’re thinking - finally, someone is paying attention to them. As a mid-40’s middle class white man, I can speak to how difficult our lived experience is, and express my gratitude that we can now step into the sunlight from the shadows and let our previously silenced voices be heard...
Setting the sarcasm to one side, we white guys have had several centuries of getting the better end of the stick when compared to almost everyone else, so it’s hard to see why we need a day of support.
Except that like nuclear proliferation and measles, it’s in everyone’s interest to stop us getting out of hand. And that’s where the theme of this year’s International Men’s Day might actually might be useful - positive male role models.
For several years now, role models for men have been pulled from a pick-n-mix of weirdos, degenerates and eejits. We’ve had Jordan Peterson, the constantly weeping psychology professor who committed to a diet entirely of beef and a lexicon entirely of bovine excreta.
Peterson talks un-evidenced psuedo-academic nonsense, like this doozy from his book We Who Wrestle With God: “The Great Father is the priori structure of value, derived from the actions of the spirit that gave rise to such structure, and composed of the consequences of its creative and regenerative action.”
