JD Vance laughs at his own jokes, which is up there with referring to yourself in the third person

Years ago, dealing with a leading politician, I wondered, with some frustration, why she was so willing to be photographed with another member of her party who seemed to me to be markedly without merit.
“He’s batshit crazy,” I pointed out. She nodded.
“Batshit crazy wins votes as long as it’s funny,” she opined.
The two of us went silent in acknowledgement of a newly invented political rule. That rule was totally personified by Donald Trump — first time around. His craziness was highly entertaining.
Remember, it wasn’t just his faithful who pounced on his every tweet. This time around, it’s less entertaining. It’s been a swing-and-a-miss from him ever since Joe Biden ushered Kamala Harris into the hot seat. He’s accused her of a lot of crazy stuff, but none of it is that infuriating or entertaining.
But the real joy (to use a Democrat term) of his presidential campaign has been his vice presidential nominee, JD Vance.
Vance's wonderful book, Hillbilly Elegy, has gone right back up the bestseller lists in the United States since Trump nominated him, which is scary for authors who already feel pressured to share their innermost thoughts, fears, and bad habits on social and mainstream media as a marketing method to sell their latest book.
